A unique solution to iodine deficiency
Iodine is an element essential in the formation of thyroid hormones. Our bodies cannot synthesize enough iodine to support our metabolic reactions, so it is usually acquired through food sources.
However, underprivileged and uneducated individuals do not have access to, or are not aware of iodine- rich foods. These people develop iodine deficiency. In 2015, this was the case in a tribal village in Maharashtra. An organization named Grey for Good came up with an appealing and effective way to combat this issue.
A bindi is a dot worn in the middle of the forehead by Indian women. This company manufactured their own bindis containing 100-150 mg of iodine embedded in them. When worn, the iodine would be absorbed into the body through the skin. Each of these malnourished women were given 30 bindis per month. Hence, the women reaped the benefits of good health and tradition using one simple product!
