GESTATIONAL DIABETES

Gestational Diabetes

Gestational Diabetes is a condition which occurs during pregnancy when the blood sugar levels become too high. There are two classes of gestational diabetes: class A1 and class A2. Class A1 is where the affected person is able to keep the diabetes under control by simple diet and exercise. Class A2, on the other hand, is where the affected person may need to take insulin or other external medications. This type of diabetes usually persists only for the duration of the pregnancy after which the patient is no longer affected. However, there is a possibility that this may increase the person’s risk of getting type 2 diabetes mellitus later on in their life. There is also a chance that the baby’s health may be affected due to this gestational diabetes. Hence, it is essential for pregnant women to keep a strict control on their diet and exercise regulars in order to avoid this type of diabetes and preserve the health of their baby and themselves.
